Ok, so it's 10:48pm Saturday night. Laying in bed trying to sleep but it's not happening because we are like, 35 hours away from Goofy's Neurology consult. I have a plan in place, I have steps ordered to get ready for it, including painting my nails tomorrow and deciding on an outfit for Big Daddy, the boy and myself. This is one time the boy is not getting his nails painted too.
I have had several weeks to prepare. I have filled out the parers and made the notes and analyzed my son. That part of it is all done. I'm still adding notes to my notes, watching for new things to write down but that's not what's keeping me up tonight.
What is keeping me up is the game plan. You know those notes coaches make with x's and o's and arrows directing who goes where? Yeah. I have 3 bases that need covered.
That leaves 2 people to cover 2 bases, right? Perfect, you say? Not so much because here's the thing...
I could leave Thing2 home with Mom, which is the original plan because he's watched Alex for me before and knows what to expect. That is also good because Walter is better with Goofy because Thing2 gets upset with Goofy and shows his frustration. I really don't want a screaming match going down in the waiting room while we're talking to the doctor. So, leave Thing2 at home to help Mom, Walter covers the waiting room with Goofy.
BUT, Thing2 has never had Alex without Walter. The 2 people in the world that mean anything to that boy is "Mommommom" and Walter. If we both leave, how is Alex going to do with that? If Alex gets lost, can Thing2 and Mom think clearly enough to know what to do? Walter is not new to that game. BUT, it's only 2 hours. 2 Care Bears, 2 Sesame Streets or 1 1/2 Wizard of Oz's. He'll survive that...
How is the Dr's staff going to see an 11 year old boy watching a 5 year old? What if Goofy won't listen to Walter? What if he tries to take off or throws a fit and Walter isn't big enough to handle him? Maybe it would be better to take Thing2 and leave Walter but that goes back to the *believe me* unavoidable screaming match over the way Thing2 thinks Goofy should be acting? Would Thing2 upset Goofy to the point that this appointment ends in an epic disaster?
Pretty much summed up- No one can handle Goofy or Alex the way I do and I can't be in 3 places at once. Why do these people think it's such a good idea to split us up for the consult? It would be so much easier if Goofy could go with us and I could leave Thing2 AND Walter home with Alex.

- Base 1 is the talk with the doctor. That is decided- both Big Daddy and I are going.
- Base 2 is the home front. There has to be an adult in the house, Mom's going to be here for that.
- Base 3 is the waiting room because Goofy cannot go in with us and someone needs to sit with him.

Why do they want to see Goofy with you? When we went, the final appointment, was STRICTLY for the parents. It was where they explained everything to us, where we conferred and asked questions. NOT where they interviewed us separately from the kid being evaluated. That's, honestly, total bs. I'd say so, too.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure if it is only for Neuro appointments related to spectrum issues but we have had multiple appointments with specialists and we have never had to be without our child. I am sure the dr office has had times with families who have no alternative but to bring their child....if they are a single parent etc.
ReplyDeleteWhat abt Thing 1 or his girl? Can't one of them stay in the waiting room with Goofy?
